Laura Thornton (1852-1935) and Cornelius Hughson

Laura Thornton (1852-1935), daughter of Thomas Thornton, married Cornelius J. Hughson (1847-1947) 1n 1877.  I believe Cornelius was the son of Richard who is linked to a loyalist family.  Children of the family were:

  • Alice M. Hughson  (1879-).  Married Oswald Sandercock.
    • Edwin Sandercock.
  • Florence E. Hughson  (1884-1982).  Married  Ernest J.  Hamm  (188-1969).
    • Calvin Hamm
    • Neil Hamm
    • Donald Hamm
    • Beatrice Hamm
  • Sydney J. Hughson    (1888-).  Married Elizabeth Taylor. Sydney played the Euphonium in a well know Toronto band.  Should be a photo of the group somewhere.
    • Glen Hughson.   Married Jean Cornish.
  • Jennie M. Hughson   (1891-1989).   Married George Richardson (1891-1974).  A postcard (no date) notes they sold their farm and moved to  Toronto. She may have moved to Illinois in bout 1958 and on her death her last residence is listed as the US Consulate (Canada).
    • Monty Richardson.  Married Thelma Laurenson.
      • Norma Richardson.

Many of these family members stayed in touch with Helen Thornton over the years.

We do have a photo with some of these family members as well as Irma Thornton.   It was taken along the river in Orono on thanksgiving day, 1908,  photo is about 3″x3″,, which became part of a calendar.  Fortunately, the names have been listed on the back along with Christmas greetings.   People in this photo: C.J. Hughson (Cornelius), B.T. Thornton (Benjamin), Alice Hughson, Mrs R.H. Warder (Bernice), Marion Warder, Lizzie Taylor, Sidney Hughson, Mrs E.J. Hamm (Florence Hughson).  In the boat:  Mr. E.J. Hamm, Irma Thornton.    Note:  I will try to clean the photo up some more.

On left: Cornelius Hughson, Ben Thornton, Alice Hughson, Bernice Thornton with daughter, E. Hamm, Florence Hughson.  In boat: back Sidney Hughson, Irma Thornton. (I love the boat in this photo.  Difficult to see, but it has a little paddle wheel.)

I believe this is Helen Thornton (left) and sister Laura Thornton, perhaps carrying her first child (Alice).
