Rebecca Thornton (1857-1940)

Rebecca Thornton (1857-1940), daughter of Thomas Thornton, carries the name of her grandmother, Rebecca Larue.   We know little of Rebecca at this time other than that she was a musician and in 1889 she was taking university courses at Charles Ruse School of Music in Rochester, NY.   I can find nothing on this school but have found a Joseph and Charles Ruse of Bowmanville who went on to become Professors of Music.  She returned from there is 1909 to live with her father.  Rebecca appear to have not married and when her sisters wrote to Helen they often added the note:  “Becca says hello”.

Is the photo below of Rebecca?  To me it looks a little like one of the sisters in the family photo.  We have two copies of this photo: one which must have been the original, but with notes on the back saying to the printer that the eyebrows were too strong, etc.  A second photo is then printed which looks amazingly different.  This suggests the photo may have had more significance than being of a sister.  So could this have been a mother?  Indeed, why are there no photos of both Thomas and Susanna  in the family box?   Could this be Susanna (Powers) Thornton?  Or perhaps it is Rebecca LaRue, wife of Nathaniel Hart Powers.  Would love to know.

Two versions of the same photo.  The retouched on has some colour added suggesting to me it was done in the early 20th century.  But why were both versions in Helen’s file?  Had she ordered the retouch?  If so why?

Hugh Simpson (1858-1944) & Helen Thornton

Hugh Simpson (1858-1944) married Helen Thornton (1860-1932) in Whitby, Ontario, in 1883.  Helen was the daughter of Thomas Thornton and Susannah Powers of Clarke Township, Ontario.   Hugh was the the son of George Simpson (1834-1921) and Jane Manes (1838-91919) also of Clarke township.

Hugh and Helen had three children:

  • Percy Simpson (1885-1900) Born in Ontario.
  • Harold Ray Simpson (1889-1921). Born in Ontario.
  • Durward Simpson (1902-1981) Born in Broadview, Saskatchewan.

Helen and Hugh were married in Whitby, ON where Hugh was teaching, having qualified as a teacher some years previous.  He studied through Queen’s University in the 1980 and in 1899 was appointed principal of the Orono school.  In March 1901 he was offered the position of principal in Broadview, Saskatchewan, where they also had a farm.   They left Broadview around 1911 began a homestead in the Wood Mountain area (near Limerick) of Saskatchewan, where he also taught for a short while.  On the death of their second child, Ray, from war injuries they returned to Broadview where they spent the remainder of their lives.  Helen may have had Brights disease and been unwell for some time before her death in 1932.

Hugh and Helen’s homestead in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan.  If you could zoom you would notice a post office sign and a drop slot in the door.

George Kidd Simpson (1834-1921) and Jane Manes

There are many Hugh Simpsons, but the one we are interested in, as he marries Helen Thornton, is the son of George Kidd Simpson (Sept. 19, 1834-July 13, 1921) and Jane Manes (Oct. 23, 1838-Jan. 2, 1919).   George, born in Hope Township, Ontario [part of the old Durham county]  was the son of Hugh Simpson and Mary Kidd.   Jane most likely the daughter of Hugh and Mary Manes of Clarke township.   George and Jane are buried in the Little Lake Cemetery of Peterborough, Ontario.  Here are the members of George and Jane’s  family, I believe:

  • Hugh Simpson (1858-1944).  Married Helen Thornton, moved to Saskatchewan.  See the post for Hugh Simpson and Helen Thornton.  Both buried in Broadview, SK.
    • Percy Simpson
    • Harold Ray Simpson
    • Durward Simpson
  • Joseph Simpson (1860-). Living at home in 1891 and then I am unable to find him. I believe he may have lived in Toronto but more later.   His daughter may have been Myrtle Simpson.
  • Jane (Jennie) Manes Simpson (1863-1966).  Married Thomas James Robinson (1863-) in 1906. Her name is “Jennie” in 1906 and in the 1911 census it is “Janny”.  In 1911 she and her husband are living with his mother, but no children.
  • Mary Ann Simpson (1867-1933).  Married William John Pritchard (1869-) in 1889 and they lived at R.R. 1,  Millbrook, ON.
    • Mable Pritchard (1891-).  Married Royal A. Hutchinson (1884-) in 1918.  He was son of John and Elizabeth Hutchinson and had siblings names Louis J., Oscar, Essie, Amy, Mildred and Grace.
      • Ken Hutchinson (1919-2012).
    • Suttle Joseph Pritchard (1895-1983).  Served in WW1 but as he registered late probably did not see action.  Married Mary Florence Jane Miller in 1921.  Was a cattle buyer. He remarried at the age of 81.
      • Donald Miller Pritchard (1924-2009).  Was a meat inspector, a natural progression from the slaughterhouse on the farm.
      • Velma  (still lives in Peterborough, Ontario.
  • Elizabeth Simpson (1872-1942).  Buried in Little Lake cemetery, Peterborough. Probably didn’t marry.
  • George Simpson (1875-1948). Buried in Little Lake cemetery, Peterborough.  Unmarried.

George and Jane worked a small farm in Clarke Township close to their parents, then moved to a farm near Cavan in the same County and their farm is now on the outskirts of Peterborough, Ontario and is still well maintained although no longer in the family.

This must be George Simpson and Jane Manes and their six kids.  Hugh Simpson is on the top left, then Joseph and then George .   Unable to identify the other members although the top left may be Mary Ann.  Could this have been taken just prior to Hugh’s move to Saskatchewan in 1901?   I follow a blog on old photos and the author reports that in the USA men buttoned only the top button during the 1880s (also the period when women wore tight fitting dresses apparently).   If Canada was 10 years behind USA fashions, we may be looking at a photos from the 1890s. Perhaps.

Grave markers in Millbrook, Ontario read as follows:  Pritchard:  In memory of Agnes, wife of Thomas Pritchard, died Augusst 18, 1897, aged 66 years.  Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Thomas Pritchard, died Oct 3, 1907, aged 73 years.  Mary Ann Simpson, wife of W. J. Pritchard, 1869-1933.  W. J. Pritchard, 1872-1958.

Robinson:  Thomas James Robinson, 1862-1939. his wife Jane Manes Simpson, 1863-1966.  Thomas Lawson, 1803-1885, his wife Mary A. Pepper, 1799-1882.  John Robinson, 1831-1904, his wife Sarah Ann Lawson, 1831-1920.

Death certificate for Mary Ann Simpson.

Photo below of Suttle Joseph Pritchard, one of Mary Ann’s children.   Second photo is unknown – reverse says “Myrtle” , but perhaps it is Mable.

Hugh Simpson -the elder (1804-1897)

Hugh Simpson (1804-1897) married Mary Kidd (1801-1882), both born in Northern Ireland and marrying there before emigrating to Hope Township, Ontario in late 1833 or early 1834 . There is no documentation to support my assumption, but I believe they may have left Ireland during the growing emancipation of the Catholics and as Protestants they could foresee trouble.  I have a great deal of trouble piecing this family together, however, of the family members I feel confident about, the oldest daughter claims she was born in Ireland in 1833 while the next child claims to have been born in Canada in 1834.  If this is so it gives us an arrival date.   However, they are missing from the 1852 census, probably due to missing pages since their daughter who has already married does appear.  Here is the family as I have reconstructed it:   NOTE:  Please go to posts for individual members for more information.

So, our future interest is going to be in Hugh Simpson, the son of George Kidd Simpson as that is the man that married Helen Thornton. See other posts on Simpson family members

Note on reverse of photo says this is Durward Simpson’s great grand father – Hugh Simpson (the elder).

You can find the original grave stone for Hugh Simpson and Mary Kidd in the old grave stone area in Orono, Ontario.   Below we have the great great great great grandson of Hugh and Mary contemplating by the stone.

Is this a photo of Mary Kidd?  I have posted this in several places in the hope that some one might recognize it.  I have two versions of it, one the original and the other one doctored a little so it looks better.  It says Simpson on the back but the this may jusst mean the Simpson family was to pick it up.  What do you think?

Martha Thornton (1861-1953) and W.E. Souch

Martha Thornton (1861-1953), daughter of Thomas Thornton, married W.E. Souch (1866-1951) of Clarke Township, Ontario.  Martha married quite late (I think on Dec 25, 1902) so I have not been able to trace the family; for some reason they are not in the 1911 census,.

However, Helen Thornton’s family did know the Souch family (some of them moved to Saskatchewan; a Bertram Souch moved to Medicine Hat around 1900 where he operated a store and had a homestead as well) and there are references to two children: Edwin and Eber.  (There is a Heber Souch born in 1872 but this can’t be Martha’s child.)  These names appear on photos but were placed there quite late so not sure if this is accurate.   First a lovely photo of the store of W.E. Souch somewhere in Ontario. Ah!   I have now found store at 271 Albert St. in Oshawa.  A 1924 directory reports W.E. is retired and there are two other Souch family members, both book keepers, are listed (W.Edgar and Leighton).

Is this W.E. Souch in the photo?  If so, note the prominent ears as they appear in other photos. Store in Oshawa, Ontario. I believe the family may have lived in the store.

above:  Notes on back say Souch, but not sure. Could this be Martha Thornton and W.E. Souch?  Martha married very late so if these are her children this son may be the right age. Photo taken in Toronto.   Or is this Richard Best Thornton, of Woodstock?  See a post under his name.

Could this be the young man running the W.E. Souch store above?  Photo taken in Toronto.

And now a grave marker from the Orono Cemetery in Ontario.  These names appear to have been added to the monument so I suspect Martha and W.E. Souch were not buried in Orono, but I haven’t found a grave in Oshawa.

Charles Jonas Thornton (1850-1932) and Eleanor Hughson

Jonas Thornton (1850-1932), son of Thomas Thornton, married Elanor Hughson (1853-1935).  I believe the Hughson family came to Canada as loyalists and you can see this link in a previous post on the Hughson family.

Jonas was a farmer and businessman and in 1901 was elected to Parliament with a plurality of 40 votes.  This election was declared invalid for some reason and he lost the next election by a handful of votes.  But he did return to the House of Commons and served from 1908 to 1917.  You can find a photo of Jonas on the House of Commons website.    We have an August 1910 post card from Irma in Woodstock announcing that Benjamin and Jonas were traveling by train to the west coast and would stop in Broadview on the return trip.

Here is a summary of electoral success:  1896, defeated; 1900, elected; 1902, defeated; 1908, elected; 1911, elected.  He was a member of the Conservative Party.

Children of this family were:

  • Augusta Irene Thornton (1877 -1967).
  • John James Thornton (1880-).   Married Gertrude Davey.  John homesteaded in Manor, Saskatchewan in 1922. For more on this family click Manor.
    • Charles Thornton (1908-1980).  Married Hazel Rowley (1912-)
    • George Davey Thornon (1914-2008).  Married Violet Potter (1920-2007) and had a daughter Sylvia Fraser (1946-) who had two sons.
    • Kenneth Thornton.  (1909-).   Married Elizabeth Crawford .
      • Ann Thornton.  Married Arthur Stinner.
      • John W. Thornton
  • Charles E. Thornton (1888-1970).   m. (1) Iva H. Bryson, (1886-1940)  (2) Lena K. Taylor (1890-1968).   (I  have a photo of grave stone for Charles).
    • Bernice Thornton
    • Velma Thornton
    • Elizabeth Thornton
  • Viola Thornton (1890-1915).   m. J.A. Stewart (who at some point lived in Saskatoon). She appears to have been a steno in the House of Commons, perhaps working for Jonas.
    • Violet Mildred Thornton (1890-1915).  Married David Geary.

First a photo of Jonas and Eleanor when quite young.  (Taken in Bowmanville)

Notes on reverse say that this is Jonas Thornton and his wife Elanor.  Not sure I believe it.  Does anyone know?   For a younger photo see Jonas.

Below: Post card compliments C.J.Thornton, perhaps from his first election.  We have a more formal Christmas card from the House, but am unable to find it in the box.

This is the Photo of Jonas that appears on the Canadian Parliamentary web site, thanks to his great great granddaughter.

Laura Thornton (1852-1935) and Cornelius Hughson

Laura Thornton (1852-1935), daughter of Thomas Thornton, married Cornelius J. Hughson (1847-1947) 1n 1877.  I believe Cornelius was the son of Richard who is linked to a loyalist family.  Children of the family were:

  • Alice M. Hughson  (1879-).  Married Oswald Sandercock.
    • Edwin Sandercock.
  • Florence E. Hughson  (1884-1982).  Married  Ernest J.  Hamm  (188-1969).
    • Calvin Hamm
    • Neil Hamm
    • Donald Hamm
    • Beatrice Hamm
  • Sydney J. Hughson    (1888-).  Married Elizabeth Taylor. Sydney played the Euphonium in a well know Toronto band.  Should be a photo of the group somewhere.
    • Glen Hughson.   Married Jean Cornish.
  • Jennie M. Hughson   (1891-1989).   Married George Richardson (1891-1974).  A postcard (no date) notes they sold their farm and moved to  Toronto. She may have moved to Illinois in bout 1958 and on her death her last residence is listed as the US Consulate (Canada).
    • Monty Richardson.  Married Thelma Laurenson.
      • Norma Richardson.

Many of these family members stayed in touch with Helen Thornton over the years.

We do have a photo with some of these family members as well as Irma Thornton.   It was taken along the river in Orono on thanksgiving day, 1908,  photo is about 3″x3″,, which became part of a calendar.  Fortunately, the names have been listed on the back along with Christmas greetings.   People in this photo: C.J. Hughson (Cornelius), B.T. Thornton (Benjamin), Alice Hughson, Mrs R.H. Warder (Bernice), Marion Warder, Lizzie Taylor, Sidney Hughson, Mrs E.J. Hamm (Florence Hughson).  In the boat:  Mr. E.J. Hamm, Irma Thornton.    Note:  I will try to clean the photo up some more.

On left: Cornelius Hughson, Ben Thornton, Alice Hughson, Bernice Thornton with daughter, E. Hamm, Florence Hughson.  In boat: back Sidney Hughson, Irma Thornton. (I love the boat in this photo.  Difficult to see, but it has a little paddle wheel.)

I believe this is Helen Thornton (left) and sister Laura Thornton, perhaps carrying her first child (Alice).

Bernice Thornton (1869-1948) and Robert Warder

Bernice Sophia Thornton (1869-1948), daughter of Thomas Thornton, married Robert Warder (1863-1949) of Clarke Township.    They had two children:

  • Helen Warder b. 1887 and died at age ten.
  • Marion Warder  (1903-).     Marion was a friend of one of Helen Thornton’s son and they exchanged postcards.

No clear photo of Bernice but check this photo.  Below is a photo of a young Marion Warder, taken in Belleville, Ontario.

Below: Grave stone for Bernice Thornton and Robert Warder and daughter Helen.   Orono, Ontario.

Robert Warder is the fellow in the top right corner.  Celebrating the 50th anniversary of his parents.

Benjamin Thornton (1855-1929) and Bertha Turner

Benjamin Thornton (1855-1929), a son of Thomas Thornton, married Bertha Turner (1862-1939), the sister of Franklin Thornton’s wife, Eva.   They farmed in the Woodstock area of Ontario.   For a few years sister-in-law Eva lived with them along with her daughter Irma.  I think Eva was the wife of Franklin Thornton who died around 1890.  Irma remained in contact with Helen Thornton for many years.  Benjamin’s brothers Marshall and Franklin also lived in the Woodstock area.   For a photo of Benjamin’s grave stone click here.  Buried in Hillview Cemetery, Woodstock. Ontario.

The only child I am aware of is Flossy Thornton b. 1887.

Below:  Bertha (Turner) Thornton.  Second photo is a “tin type” plate, about 2″x2″.

Ulysses Thornton (1865-1916) and Augusta Dale

Ulysses (Ulissis) Nathaniel Thornton (1865-1925), carrying the name of his grandfather Nathaniel Hart Powers,  was the son of Thomas Thornton and Susanna Powers, married Augusta Dale (1859-1916). Ulysses became a doctor and the story goes that he assisted in the delivery of one of his sister’s grand children, Sam Ulyssis Dowson, in Broadview, Saskatchewan.  Studied medicine at Trinity University and moved to Illinois (just outside of Chicago), in about 1887.  Was listed as an Allopath (a conventional doctor) and died of a stroke in 1925.  Buried in Leland, LaSalle County, Illinois.

They had two children:

  • Charles Dale Thornton (1893-1967).   Married Anne Carlson.  Died, and is buried in Cuba, Fulton County, Illinois.
  • Dorothy Thornton (1896-1968).  I believe she studied nursing in Boston.  She too died in Cuba, Fulton County, Illinois.   I believe she did not marry.
